Leadership Philosophy

My leadership philosophy is shaped by multiple aspects of my identity and the experiences I have had as a student and professional.  My perspectives on team management, professional development, and training and supporting others play an important role in my identity as a leader.  My values influence my professional identity, leadership philosophy, and the impact I hope to have throughout my career.

Values

In my personal and professional life, I value empathy, compassion, trust, diversity of thought and experiences, and equitable learning and employment environments.  I value details, clear communication, a sense of humor, building relationships with others, and opportunities to analyze and reflect.  I also value receiving support from colleagues and other managers in navigating challenging situations.  Finally, I value leaders who serve as advocates, take the time to recognize the strengths of others, and provide opportunities for continued learning and growth.

Professional Identity

At work, my professional identity and leadership has been profoundly shaped by my time as a manager of a team largely consisting of new professionals.  By participating in interviewing, training, workload delegation, team restructuring, collaboration, celebrating successes, and providing constructive feedback on areas for improvement, I developed a holistic approach to supporting teammates with honesty and optimism.  I have a genuine interest in the well-being of my colleagues, and I can adapt my leadership style to support the unique needs of others.

I hope to be seen as someone who is thoughtful, supportive, optimistic, and a problem-solver.  I look forward to enhancing my skills and applying new perspectives and knowledge in future management positions.  I enjoyed serving as a manager and team leader and will continue to explore topics and trends in effective leadership.  In my experience, an effective leader shares expectations and goals and offers direction and guidance.  A leader also has the responsibility of knowing when to step back and foster autonomy and creativity in others.  I hope to be seen as a leader who can seamlessly navigate those roles to support the success of individuals and groups.

Impact

I am excited to be part of a diverse, forward-thinking group of higher education professionals whose training emphasized social justice and inclusion and assessment of student learning outcomes.  I hope to make an impact by training and leading well-rounded, diverse teams in supporting student success.  I would like to apply my background in assessment to support evaluation of student learning in areas that are challenging to measure, such as study abroad outcomes.  I would also like to help create working and learning environments where multiple perspectives are sought, and continued learning is encouraged.

My values and personality shape who I am as a professional, and in turn my experience as a manager has further shaped and defined my values in working with others.  I hope to be seen as a leader, even when I am not in a supervisory role, and I will continue to pursue opportunities for leadership development.  I welcome new experiences that will shape my professional identity and provide additional perspectives on leadership, collaboration, and student success initiatives.
